Learn Moroccan Arabic: 5 Best Darija Dictionaries & Apps That Actually Work

Learn Moroccan Arabic

Intro

Salamo 3alykoooom! Alright, real talk. I’ve been teaching Moroccan Arabic (Darija) for half a decade. I’ve heard every complaint: “Where’s a good dictionary?” “Why does Google Translate think ‘safi’ means ‘sapphire’?” I feel you.

Darija’s messy, borrowing from everywhere… and that’s beautiful. But for learners? It’s a test. That’s why I’ve demoed every app and website you’ll see below. I’m here to help you learn Moroccan Arabic without embarrassing yourself at the souk.

1. Moroccan Darija Dictionary by Philipp Mengs (iOS)

Moroccan Darija dictionary

This app over 4,500 entries, native-speaker audio, script + transliteration, example sentences, and even a full conjugation pack, this is the gold standard. Offline-ready and perfect for deep learners.

Unlike flimsy phrasebooks, this one lets you mark favorites, search by tags, and drill conjugations. It’s almost like having me whisper verb forms at you… without the handsome distraction, also this app is paid, it cost around 9USD at the time of writing this blog post.

Fun fact: Philipp and his wife were actually two of my Darija students—and I’m proud to have helped this German couple on their Darija journey. Even the voice actor for the app’s audio? A good friend of mine. It’s a full-circle moment I’m honored to share.

2. Living Arabic Project – North African Dictionary (Web)

The living Arabic project

This isn’t just a list—it’s a structured dialectal playground that digs into roots, phrases, and grammar. Though not a flashy app, it lets you search by root or meaning, highlights Moroccan usage within Maghrebi contexts, and gives you examples across dialects—rare depth for those serious about Darija.

If you’re the type who loves linguistic rabbit holes and comparative insight, this is your treasure trove. Just don’t use it while crossing the street—you’ll get lost in examples.

3. Morolingo: Cultural Immersion Meets Dictionary

Morolingo

Morolingo blends short lessons, audio-rich dialogues, and a built-in bilingual dictionary. What sets it apart is the cultural storytelling—each vocabulary chunk is tied to everyday Moroccan scenes. It’s like learning Darija through a Moroccan sitcom. Good if you vibe with cultural context, less so if you’re rushing to memorize conjugations.

4. Darija Dictionary–Translator by Ouadia Bouiz (Android)

Forgot

If you’re after something simple, clean, and surprisingly powerful, this one’s a sleeper hit. With over 2,000 offline words, this app lets you translate between English and Darija (and up to 14 other languages) with options for voice output, verb conjugation, and multiple language pairs.

What sets it apart? The clean interface. Unlike cluttered apps that feel like 2012 in your pocket, this one is crisp, modern, and snappy. Need to say “I want” in Darija? It gives you the infinitive (bgha), present (kibghi), and past (bgha)—plus the noun form when applicable. For beginners and travelers alike, that’s a game changer.

Pros:

  • Multi-language support (14+)
  • Voice pronunciation + copy/share options
  • Offline-friendly
  • Smooth UI

Cons:

  • Limited total word bank (compared to Philipp Mengs’ app)
  • No contextual phrases or culture notes

In my opinion, I think this is great as a supplementary app—quick check-ins, daily verbs, or when you don’t want to deal with logins or subscriptions. Pair it with ChatGPT or Morolingo for more context.

5. ChatGPT: Your Always-On Darija Teacher

Chatgpt translating Darija to English

Yes, even AI has its place. ChatGPT can translate, explain slang, show pronunciation notes, and even give mini cultural slang lessons. Ask:

“Explain ‘safi’ in Darija, with example sentences.”

You’ll get more than “it means ‘enough’”—you’ll learn usage, nuance, tone. Just don’t ask it to solve your existential crisis: “What does life mean in Darija?” You’ll get a… philosophical answer.
